Comcast is hard at work attempting to gain

The film and music industries have been waging a war against file sharing through the courts for years, but have more recently started working with governments and ISPs to stop sharing at the source. The so-called “six strikes” copyright alert system (CAS) went live in the US earlier this year, but it has thus far failed to deter piracy. Comcast is now spearheading an effort to overhaul CAS and convert illegal downloads into paid ones.

Under the current six strikes model, which most major ISPs participate in, a user is sent increasingly annoying warnings each time an instance of copyright infringement is detected. After five or six warnings, the ISP is authorized to slow the connection for a period of time, or even shut it off temporarily. This has proven to be a fairly weak deterrent by Comcast’s own measures. Going too far the other way comes with its own problems.

A number of European countries have instituted three strikes laws that carry harsh penalties for people suspected of repeated infringement. France was an enthusiastic supporter of its version of three-strikes called Hadopi. Under this system, a user would receive two warnings, then after a third alleged incident, their internet access would be cut off. Not only that, the users would end up on a blacklist that prevented other ISPs from providing service for at least a year. Hadopi has been widely criticized,Cheap Dedicated Server and was recently scaled back. Now the third strike only triggers a small fine.

The conversion system as described by Comcast would use the same mechanisms to detect the sharing of copyrighted works, but instead of sending out a warning letter, it would take immediate action. It might link to the cable provider’s own video-on-demand service, or an external one like iTunes or Amazon.

For years the copyright holders in various industries treated infringement as a crime that deserved harsh punishment. Working from that starting point, individual users have been sued for millions of dollars for sharing a handful of songs. In some ways the new proposal assumes some piracy is simply a matter of convenience. If a pirate is provided with a quick and easy to to pay for the content, they might do so.

There was a good fit for other apps designed for broader uses to work within a farm system.

“In the scheme of things, the Australian agricultural market is only fairly small, so developers need to have fairly high costs for the product to make a profit," Mr Heath said.

“Other apps not designed specifically for agriculture can also be really useful and don’t cost much.”

Mr Heath, a former farmer on the Liverpool Plains in NSW, said free or cheap apps and systems could be used as communication or data collection tools in particular.

Speaking at last week’s Birchip Cropping Group (BCG) expo, Mr Heath said products like Dropbox, which allows users to store information in ‘the cloud’, or via a web-based server, could be useful both in terms of access to information and sharing the data.

“Storing information in the cloud means you can have access to it anywhere, and it is safely stored, you don’t have to worry about a faulty hard drive or memory stick,” he said.

He said growers could share information with their adviser to allow the adviser to give timely suggestions, rather than having to have them physically come out to the property.

Other useful products include Evernote, an annotation app.

While putting together his IT department at Torus in 2009, Torus Americas CIO Justin Manley didn’t have the constraints that many of his competitors face. Add in the fact that his bosses at Torus “always go after the best people,” according to Manley, and the start-up company was able to lift the shackles off his IT team.

“One of the things I tried to do is not constrain myself by focusing only on this [insurance] sector,” says Manley. “I looked for people in adjacent markets—financial services—where certain technical experiences could map well to what we were doing.”

Manley himself learned his trade in other markets. He began his 20-plus years career in technology in the telecom industry before moving into financial services—but not insurance. He moved into the insurance industry eight years ago.

“We were charged [at Torus] with building a 21st century insurance company,” he says. “We did not hire people to build a legacy insurance company. I’ve been building consumer applications—web-based, thoughtfully designed, straight-through processing with minimal human contact if possible. That’s where we’ve leveraged IT a lot to allow for traditional underwriting to occur with focus and precision and not necessarily incredible human growth. We’ve been able to grow our top line by allowing computers to do things they might not have done in days gone by.”

Two of Manley’s hires came to Torus from JetBlue where they managed the low-fare airline’s online reservation system.

“They are very heavy in the technology we are using,” says Manley. “I look for hunger in people that have been in a position for a while but aspire to go higher and grow. If you are willing to pay the right price you can find anybody.”

One of the challenges of being a CIO with a specialty commercial lines carrier is that it’s difficult to achieve growth as competitors go after each other’s customers. The status quo is particularly favourable to America

The saga of Edward Snowden and the NSA makes one thing clear: The United States' central role in developing the Internet and hosting its most powerful players has made it the global leader in the surveillance game.

Other countries, from dictatorships to democracies, are also avid snoopers, tapping into the high-capacity fibre optic cables to intercept Internet traffic, scooping their citizens' data off domestic servers, and even launching cyber attacks to win access to foreign networks.

But experts in the field say that Silicon Valley has made America a surveillance superpower, allowing its spies access to massive mountains of data being collected by the world's leading communications, social media, and online storage companies. That's on top of the United States' fibre optic infrastructure - responsible for just under a third of the world's international Internet capacity, according to telecom research firm TeleGeography - which allows it to act as a global postmaster, complete with the ability to peek at a big chunk of the world's messages in transit.

"The sheer power of the US infrastructure is that quite often data would be routed though the US even if it didn't make geographical sense," Joss Wright, a researcher with the Oxford Internet Institute, said in a telephone interview. "The current status quo is a huge benefit to the US."

The status quo is particularly favourable to America because online spying drills into people's private everyday lives in a way that other, more traditional forms of espionage can't match. China and Russia have long hosted intrusive surveillance regimes. Russia's "SORM," the Russian-language acronym for System for Operational-Investigative Activities, allows government officials to directly access nearly every Internet service provider in the country. Initially set up to allow the FSB, the successor organisation to the KGB, unfettered access to Russia's Internet traffic, the scope of SORM has grown dramatically since Vladimir Putin took power in 2000 and now allows a wide range law enforcement agencies to monitor Russians' messages.

In China, surveillance is "pervasive, extensive, but perhaps not as high-tech" as in the United States, said Andrew Lih, a professor of journalism at American University in Washington. He said major Internet players such as microblogging service Sina, chat service QQ, or Chinese search giant Baidu were required to have staff - perhaps as many as several hundred people - specially tasked with carrying out the state's bidding, from surveillance to censorship.

Americans' "position in the network, the range of services that they offer globally, the size of their infrastructure, and the amount of bandwidth means that the US is in a very privileged position to surveil internationally," said Wright. "That's particularly true when you're talking about cloud services such as Gmail" - which had 425 million active users as of last year.

Many are trying to beat America's tech dominance by demanding that US companies open local branches - something the Turkish government recently asked of San Francisco-based Twitter Inc., for example - or by banning them altogether. Santa Clara, California-based WhatsApp, for example, may soon be prohibited in Saudi Arabia.

Governments are also racing to capture traffic as it bounces back and forth from California, importing bulk surveillance devices, loosening spy laws, and installing centralised monitoring centres to offer officials a one-stop shop for intercepted data.

Middle Eastern governments have installed Western-made surveillance technology to monitor domestic communications in bulk sometimes with help from the very same contractors which do work for the NSA.

Local chef revives restored Linden hotel

From sack lunches to soufflés, executive chef Michael Grauer has come a long way to find his calling running a small restaurant down the road in Linden.

From private clubs to chain restaurants and hotels like Red Lobster and the Marriott, Grauer has learned the restaurant business from every angle. From server to bartender to chef, his new challenge is to “make his mark” by showcasing his signature style and getting back to his rural roots in Middle Tennessee.

Grauer discovered an ad for head chef at the Commodore Hotel & Cafe in Linden.

“I read the ad and thought, this could be good,” said Grauer. “I showed it to my wife, and she said, ‘You gotta go there.You can get these MileWeb Exclusive Features if you reach certain.’”

After meeting the owners Michael and Kathy Dumont, Grauer was impressed. Their dedication, commitment and tenacity in restoring and renewing a dilapidated, downtown landmark building and in striving to make it a successful business were inspiring.

“I wanted to be part of that,” says Grauer. “I wanted to share in a more intimate venue.”

After 12 years between Embassy Suites and the Marriott Hotel in Franklin, Grauer knows how to feed a crowd — up to 1,600 in one day, in fact. And feed them very well. From gourmet to country favorites, Grauer has a flair that made a recent customer remark, “from Maine to Spain, those are the best crab cakes I have ever tasted!”

Grauer’s path started with a heart attack. His father traveled a lot for his job, and his mother cared for Grauer and his four brothers and sisters. When Grauer was 12, “Mom had a heart attack, and survived, but was severely limited in what she could do,” says Grauer. “I was the second oldest (child). My older brother — to this day – can’t boil water, so I was in the kitchen, making sack lunches for my brothers and sisters.”

Grauer was also cooking family dinners “with Mom’s coaching” when he was in junior high.

When he entered the workforce, he was a server and bartender. Then he was hit with the cooking bug again when he watched Chef Kevin Ocella at a private club put dishes together with such ease and a deft touch that it left a lasting impression. As time went on, he started gravitating toward the back of the house.

“When I met Jarod Hutto, it took off like a freight train,” says Grauer. “Hutto’s degrees in biology and culinary arts challenged my imagination and skills like never before. One day he came in the kitchen and threw a bag of marshmallows and some ahi tuna on the counter. The challenge was: how do they fit together in the same dish? It wasn’t without a lot of hard work and continuing education.

Grauer comments on being a chef, “It takes self-discipline. It has to be in your blood. Chefs have an enormous amount of passion and pride in what we do, and we never take shortcuts.” Where does this passion come from? “It comes from my dad. Dad, known to his buddies as “Honest John,” always said, ‘If you’re gonna do something, do it right, and the right way. No matter if anyone’s looking or not.’”

A resident of Columbia, Grauer’s family has been in Tennessee since 1803. His distant cousin was Conf. Gen. Benjamin Jefferson Hill, Commanding Officer of the 35th Tennessee, Warren County – McMinnville. Gen. Hill was actually the last general to surrender in the Civil War.

After only a few weeks, Grauer has transformed the Commodore’s menu and staff with an emphasis on superior service, value and local ingredients. Grauer’s service was a big hit on Mother’s Day, with his tableside preparation of Bananas Foster.
