A June 14, 2013, Forrester Research report, titled: "The Forrester Wave: Enterprise Public Cloud Platforms, Q2 2013," states "Microsoft's strategy for Windows Azure is very strong for two reasons ... creating a single platform spanning many clouds is achievable, valuable, and a natural act for Microsoft. ... Microsoft's openness to other platforms, languages, databases, development environments, and tools is genuine and virtually assures Windows Azure's relevance as technology evolves."

“Honestly, privacy wasn’t a motivation at all when I started the company,” Weinberg said in an interview from his Philadelphia-area headquarters. “But shortly after I launched DuckDuckGo, people in the tech community who used the site started asking me questions about privacy. So I stopped what I was doing and began a personal investigation into the history of search privacy.”

“If you think about it, a search engine is the first place you go if you have a serious problem, like a medical diagnosis. People type in their problems. It’s kind of creepy for a search engine to know so much about you.”

“I also found that users’ search histories were being handed over to government and law enforcement agencies. And beyond the government, there’s a commercial equivalent of mass surveillance that people find annoying. Think of all the ads following you around the Internet and targeting you all the time. There’s even stuff a lot of people don’t know about yet like companies charging you higher prices based on your data profile, which shows that you shop in higher end stores. If you can believe it, you can sit right next to someone, go to the same website and get a different quoted price for an item!”

As a result of what he learned, Weinberg’s search engine doesn’t keep any personally identifiable information. DuckDuckGo doesn’t identify users with cookies, and deletes user agents and IP addresses from its server logs. According to its privacy page, the site doesn’t attempt to generate a so-called anonymized identifier to tie searches together. In other words, DuckDuckGo has no way of even knowing whether two searches came from the same computer.

“My whole thing was, ‘How do you make a better search experience?’ My thought was you don’t need to track people to make money in web search. And you don’t need to track people to make better results. So why track people at all?”

Founded in 2008, DuckDuckGo limped along for its first few years with a small but dedicated clientele. It was attracting less than one million searches a day until January 2012, when Google announced plans to aggregate user data across all of its services. Almost immediately, the site’s web traffic spiked. But DuckDuckGo’s popularity exploded earlier this summer in the aftermath of revelations about the US National Security Agency’s secret Prism surveillance program.

why a service like Opbeat is a critical

While it’s apparently becoming easier and easier to become a developer — judging, at least, by the number of “learn to code!” platforms popping up by the month — the role of a lead developer and engineer within a young tech company has become increasingly demanding over the last five years. The job description now includes an expanding set of responsibilities. While many have focused on the consumer-side, Paul Graham recently wrote that “startups building things for other startups”have the potential to take off in a big way given the growing pool of potential users — in other words, other startups.

Opbeat, a stealth, Danish startup founded last year, is a startup that’s doing just that — particularly for the many over-worked engineers and developers to be found slaving away at your local startup. Specifically, Opbeat wants to help developers by giving them their own, hosted Control Center for the many web operations they manage on a daily basis — and one that can be set up in a matter of minutes.

By doing so, the young startup has attracted some of the most influential startup developers in recent memory not just as users, by as investors. To wit: Opbeat is announcing today that it has raised two rounds of outside financing from an impressive list of investors, beginning with — most recently — a $2.7 million series A round led by Balderton capital.

The startup also raised a seed round earlier this year from a group of angel investors, which include Instagram co-founder Mike Krieger, Facebook co-founder Andrew McCollum, former Spotify CTO Andreas Ehn, 23 co-founder Steffan Christensen and Thomas Madsen-Mygdal, an early investor in Podio, which was acquired by Citrix last year.

For Krieger, the contribution to Opbeat’s seed financing marks the first investment he’s made since Instagram was acquired by Facebook last year. “When I saw [Opbeat's] approach to taking on the challenges of life for developers, I immediately wanted to be involved,” Krieger says of the investment. Having been one of the leaders of a small team at Instagram that was tasked with scaling the app’s backend all while simultaneously working on building the product itself, the Instagram co-founder says that he “could relate to the serious pains Opbeat is trying to solve on the developer side.”

Opbeat co-founders and serial entrepreneurs Rasmus Makwarth and Ron Cohen say that the idea behind their new startup was born from the frustration of working at multiple tech companies,Cheap Dedicated Server where they repeatedly ran into the same problem. The small teams of developers and engineers at these businesses ended up wasting weeks and months cobbling together internal tools to manage the company’s web operations.

Facebook co-founder and Opbeat investor Andrew McCollum echoes a similar sentiment in his own recent Opbeat blog post, saying that the up-side of the many new tools and cloud platforms available to developers is that it’s now easier “to deploy and scale web than ever before.” As a result, many startups and founders are electing to “forgo a dedicated Ops team for longer,” instead leaving deployment and server management responsibilities in the hands of developers.

McCollum says that he thinks Opbeat can be a “powerful new tool in this burgeoning DevOps movement,” because it enables engineers to “move faster and spend less time fixing things when they break.” In turn, for teams that may not have the same “resources of Facebook,” he concludes, Opbeat can help them “adopt some of the goals of rapid development and empowering engineers” that one usually only finds at larger, well-financed tech companies.

The Opbeat co-founders are convinced that the problem the company wants to solve is one that many startups across the map are currently wrestling with and, as a result, presents a significant market opportunity. For now, the co-founders say that their key focus is on developers in the U.S., where they see the largest need, and that their new capital will help be used to ramp up hiring and help Opbeat do some scaling of its own.

FARMERS can look beyond expensive, designed-for-agriculture mobile apps when looking for products that can help their business according to farm technology consultant Richard Heath.

There was a good fit for other apps designed for broader uses to work within a farm system.

“In the scheme of things, the Australian agricultural market is only fairly small, so developers need to have fairly high costs for the product to make a profit," Mr Heath said.

“Other apps not designed specifically for agriculture can also be really useful and don’t cost much.”

Mr Heath, a former farmer on the Liverpool Plains in NSW, said free or cheap apps and systems could be used as communication or data collection tools in particular.

Speaking at last week’s Birchip Cropping Group (BCG) expo, Mr Heath said products like Dropbox, which allows users to store information in ‘the cloud’, or via a web-based server, could be useful both in terms of access to information and sharing the data.

“Storing information in the cloud means you can have access to it anywhere, and it is safely stored, you don’t have to worry about a faulty hard drive or memory stick,” he said.

He said growers could share information with their adviser to allow the adviser to give timely suggestions, rather than having to have them physically come out to the property.

Other useful products include Evernote, an annotation app.

“Farmers are famous for always having a notebook by their side,Cheap Dedicated Server this is just the new version of it, and again, it has the advantage of you not having to rummage around the ute to find it,” Mr Heath said.

He said Evernote gave farmers a chance to record ideas or concerns in real time.

“The notes can be sent to advisers and then the advisers can comment and send it back and it can be saved as a record,” he said.

Even basic products such as Google Earth can be used.

“The geo-locator in your phone is surprisingly accurate.”

Mr Heath said while it was more difficult than using dedicated map-making software it was possible to review things like yield maps using free mapping products.

However, there is a limit for the use of technology in terms of infrastructure.

“Connectivity is a key, and many free apps rely on connectivity," he said.

“With farmers often operating in patches with bad service, most of the dedicated agricultural apps have an offline mode as well.”

graduate inspires others to never give up

Benoit already has job shadowed a few different IT employees, one employed with Phoenix Computer Solutions who helped with Delta's technology, and another at his uncle's advertising business, Red Letter Communications. He's helped fix a few computers at the school after they crashed, replacing hard drives and cloning computers.

"As far back as I can remember, I've always been interested in computers," Benoit said.

He works on computers, knows them inside and out, and he's also a gamer. He plays MineCraft often.

Benoit is a devoted PC guy. Give him a Mac, and he can work it, but he won't be happy about it.

Benoit knows what he likes, and that's to be able to personalize everything. Apple doesn't measure up on that front.

"The user interface is more friendly," he said. "But if you're someone like me and like to customize everything and put things in different places, you don't like that."

Benoit's parents bought him a laptop for graduation, a 17-inch Toshiba with an I7 processor in it. It was supposed to be a surprise, but he helped pick it out.

"They knew I'd have a fit if they picked out the wrong one," he said.

Benoit said it's easy to succeed in school: schoolwork first, hobbies next.

His mom said as long as he worked hard, even if he got a bad grade, it was all right as long as he put in as much effort as possible.

"But it turns out I got good grades, just from working hard," Benoit said.

He is extremely proud of receiving first place in the Southeast Missouri Regional Science Fair in the computer science and mathematics division. He was the only one in the computer science portion, but the judges give awards on merit.

Benoit said if they think you haven't done well, it doesn't matter if you're the only one, you won't place.

"You still have to earn your place," he said.

Benoit said after Christmas break, his science teacher,Cheap Dedicated Server Connie Hodge, encouraged him to enter.

"At our school, we have our server racks in the computer classroom because we don't have a dedicated server room, and they have to keep the AC on all the time so [the computers] don't overheat," he said. "I wanted to show that they worked better if they're cooler."

For his project, Benoit put a computer in a freezer, refrigerator and then two hot boxes. He mounted thermometers for temperature readings. He tested how long it took from hitting the "on" button to getting to the login screen and how long the temperature took to stabilize. He also tested the time it took to load certain programs.

Benoit also won the Intel Excellence in Computer Science Award for his project.

Benoit was a member of NHS and FBLA, and he finished 50 hours for the A+ program this last year as a senior.

"Never give up," he said. "Don't let people tell you that you can't do something just because they say you can't. They may not be right if you keep trying."

Dedicated instances allow EC2 customers to run instances on hardware that is reserved just for them. They are aimed at companies which have policies or regulations preventing them from sharing a host server.

The discount applies to on-demand – pay per hour – and reserved instance – discounted hourly rates for a one-time payment - payment options, and is applicable across all supported instance types and all AWS regions.

The largest price drop is in the per region fee, Cheap MileWeb Dedicated Serverwhich drops from $10 per hour to $2 per hour in any region where at least one dedicated instance of any type is running.

The hourly costs of dedicated on-demand instances are also reduced by up to 37 per cent. For example, a dedicated instance in the US East (Northern Virginia) Region will drop from $0.84 per hour to $0.528 per hour.

Dedicated reserved instances drop in price by up to 57 percent, which applies to both the hourly instance usage fee and upfront fee. All of the price drops are effective immediately.

Since Amazon launched its public cloud service in 2006 it has lowered the cost of using the platform more than 30 times.

Microsoft’s policy, that Xbox users would require a dedicated server of their own, would divide the players, something that the team was eager to avoid.

“The policy has not changed on Microsoft’s side,” he revealed. “The main reason from our side is that I don’t want the community to be divided; to be split into two or more. For example, one player might be on the PC version, another might be on the PS4 version, and I’m playing the Xbox version – but we’re not able to join the same game servers. That is just… I just don’t like the idea. I disagree with it.”

“To be frankly honest with you, there are now so many mobile devices, smart phones, everything — why would you ever just stick to one platform from the hardware aspect? Just — make it open to everyone? That’s my opinion.”

“I would love for as many players as possible to enjoy the game worldwide, so from a business point of view it could make sense to have it on the Xbox platforms. But as I mentioned earlier, that would bring about the tragedy that somebody might have to give up their existing character. Then players might get frustrated, and then they ask us – ‘Square Enix, can’t you do something?’ and then… yeah. Unless that happens, we can’t really do anything.”
